Meet Jewel and Taimana - members of the Shara Community Gardens Steering Group

Jewel and her 11 yo daughter Taimana live in Pottsville in Koala beach Estate on a 680m2 suburban block. In 4 years we have transformed a bladey grass paddock into a full production permaculture indonesian style food forest. We are harvesting bananas (when they were $15/ kg), paw paws, mangoes, pineapples, citrus, vegies, and eggs from our efforts ( just to name a few ). We are now selling and hope to set up the same again in an even shorter plant to harvest timeframe. Yes, we can do it !!

Jewel loves to cook from her harvests and grow vegies for the produce that go into making sauces for Santos in Byron shire. Assisting the Shara gardens lift off has been great, working with an amazing team of volunteers who inject such great energy into a community space for all to share. Great team building skills here and will miss it when we move on.

Meet Elmar - chairperson of the Shara Community Gardens Steering Group

Elmar has been living in Ocean Shores for over 10 years witnessing a tremendous transformation of greater O.S. into a very desirable place to live. He believes that the time has come for residents of this part of the Shire to step out of their beautiful homes and get to know their neighbours and discover the joys of community and connection by looking after each other, our local environment, our wild places and beaches as well as creating community gardens of various shapes and sizes all over Ocean shores, skate parks, bicycle paths, walk ways, benches under shady trees, fruit trees along our streets for all to pick … and lots of other great ideas. If it takes a whole village to raise a child, lets make it a good one.

Elmar believes that there is a fresh wind of enthusiasm blowing through O.S. and locals are starting to feel a sense of pride of place and want to get involved in some way. The Shara Community Gardens is a testament of just that. Councils are coming to have a look what’s going on here to get some ideas and inspiration and see how things can be done in partnership with local residents. The buzz terminology of this sort of thing is ‘generating social capital’. What a good idea at a time of global uncertainties and turmoil! Local healthy communities are the way to go and the place to be. Greater Ocean Shores is showing the way.Whether you are a long term resident or a new arrival, feel welcome to come along and be part of the local r-evolution. Looking forward to meeting at the Shara C. Gardens.
